Ryanair cancels Lisbon-Faro flights

The Lisbon-Faro route that Irish low-cost airline Ryanair inaugurated on Tuesday is to be suspended after 24 April.

Ryanair Lisbon Faro Car HireThe airline told ANA of the decision on Thursday, just three days after starting the flights.

Ryanair is offering passengers who have already bought tickets to fly after that date that they can have their money back or choose another destination.

Ryanair’s Robin Kiely said in a statement sent to The Portugal News on Monday: “Due to constrained aircraft capacity, we regret that Ryanair is not in a position to schedule the optimum timings and frequencies required on a domestic route such as this and has reallocated this limited capacity from the Faro-Lisbon route to elsewhere in Ryanair’s international network from 23rd April. However, our aircraft capacity will increase from winter 2014 onwards, when the first of our 175 new aircraft from Boeing are delivered and we will review our schedules accordingly.”

No other internal or international routes are thought to be subject to cancellation but unprofitable routes are quickly dropped by low-cost airlines whose business model requires a high level of occupancy and the payment of subsidies by airport operators and local tourism authorities.
