Portugal rally increases tourism revenue

The 2010 Portugal rally brought in more than €85 million in revenue to the country’s tourism industry, an amount only surpassed by the Euro 2004 football event, according to a study revealed by the national automobile club (ACP)

According to the study carried out by the international investigation for territory and tourism and the University of the Algarve, “more than €50 million was made in direct expenditure, such as accommodation and meals” in the lower Alentejo and Algarve regions during the event held between 27 and 30 May.

Indirectly, around €35 million was made from media coverage of the event in the press and on international television channels.

“In total, €85,199 million is a record result for sport events carried out in Portugal,” said a statement from ACP, which organised the event. It added: “ACP is proud of the image and tourism promotion of the country thanks to this event.”
