Record visitor figures for UK

VisitBritain has been given a positive boost following this week’s riots after it revealed June was a record month for inbound visits and spend.

Data from the International Passenger Survey (IPS) showed that 2.89 million foreign tourists visited Britain in June this year, 9% up on June 2010.

Expenditure also surpassed last year’s record by 4%, up to £1.685 billion. “This is an encouraging sign for tourism across Britain, and shows that the UK is very much open for business and making the most of the opportunity presented by hosting next year Olympics,” said Patricia Yates, director of strategy and communications at VisitBritain.

“Not only are we seeing overall visitor numbers and expenditure at their highest ever level for June, but international visits to the UK in the first half of the year are up six per cent compared with the same period last year”. She said the figures had been boosted by new routes from areas outside of North America and Europe particularly Brazil.
